The night of August 18 came as quite a shock, recounts Kevin Campbell of Century 21 Realty Ltd. Scotch Creek office. “I just never imagined our office, never mind the fire hall would burn down when the old cabins that have been on the property for decades were spared. It was all very unexpected”.
Kevin Campbell took over the reins of Century 21 Lakeside Realty from previous owner and real estate legend Al Christopherson. Lakeside Realty’s team of 16, with offices in Sorrento and Chase as well as Scotch Creek, quickly came together to support one another, their clientele and their community. “The community support in the North Shuswap is outstanding” states Campbell.” Together we did everything we could to support one another, from the volunteers who did laundry for firefighters to neighbouring communities, and insurance agencies to local officials. The only bad guy around here was the fire itself.”
Despite some initial concerns about the economic impact, Campbell reports that business is booming. “That sense of home and history and the strength of our relationships on the Shuswap shines through, and as far as I’m concerned, we’re one big happy lake family. We’ve been here for 40 years and we aren’t going anywhere.” The Scotch Creek office will be rebuilt in time. “We are a bricks and mortar shop that has an important role to play for our residents and visitors. Nothing, not even a fire, is going to change that”.
“This story is so much more about everyone else than me”, he concludes. And is the embodiment of the small but mighty spirit that defines the North Shuswap.
